In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), language acquisition plays a vital role in helping students understand the intricacies of language, culture, and diverse ways of life. As a mandatory component of the MYP, language acquisition requires schools to offer sustained language learning in at least two languages each year. It is through language acquisition that students affirm their identity by developing communication skills in various modes.
Language acquisition holds great significance in providing an international education, as it enables students to communicate effectively in multiple languages. This course presents students with linguistic and academic challenges, ensuring an enriching educational experience. Students have the opportunity to progress through different phases of language acquisition, enabling them to reach their full language-learning potential.
MYP language acquisition structure:
- The language acquisition curriculum is structured into six phases, not necessarily tied to specific age groups or MYP year levels.
- Students can enter at any phase based on their prior experiences and exit at any point along the continuum.
- The MYP eAssessment system evaluates language acquisition courses, offering IB-validated grades through international moderation of student work documented in ePortfolios. These portfolios showcase reading, writing, viewing, and speaking skills, and students receive fluency-based results: emergent, capable, or proficient.
