In the International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology is taught starting from the Diploma Program (DP). The MYP students have to take a Science course that encompasses a range of different natural sciences and prepares them for more advanced courses in the DP.
About the IB Biology
The IB DP Biology course is a part of Group 4 – sciences. The course designed to explore the living world across different scales, from the cellular level to the interactions within ecosystems. The course aims to develop students’ understanding of scientific methods and their ability to communicate scientific knowledge effectively. With the 2023 changes, the course emphasizes the “Nature of Science,” which provides students with insights into the workings of science in the 21st century, including ethical debates and limitations.
The IB Biology course follows a practical approach, allowing students to engage in designing investigations, collecting data, analyzing results, and collaborating with peers. These investigations can be conducted in laboratories or through the use of simulations and databases. The course encourages independent and collaborative work, mirroring the practices of scientific research in the wider community.
Structure of the IB Biology Syllabus:
The Biology syllabus is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).
- SL requires a minimum of 150 hours of study
- HL requires 240 hours of study
- The SL and HL courses cover common core content, and the HL students are required to study additional topics
IB Biology Assessment:
- Students are assessed through both internal and external assessments
- The internal assessment (IA) accounts for 20% of the final grade
- The external assessment accounts for 80% of the final grade
- The IA consists of an individual investigation, which can incorporate hands-on approaches, database usage, modeling, simulation, or a hybrid approach. The teacher assesses the IA, and it is externally moderated by the IB.
- The external assessment of the new 2023 IB Biology course consists of two written papers.
- Paper 1A includes multiple-choice questions based on the syllabus, while Paper 1B consists of data-based questions that address all themes.
- Paper 2A includes data-based questions from unfamiliar contexts and short-answer questions. Paper 2B focuses on extended-response questions that require a holistic understanding of a wide range of syllabus content, skills, concepts, and understandings.
