About the IB Economics

The IB DP Economics course is a part of Group 3 – Individuals and Societies. It provides students with an opportunity to understand the complexities and interdependence of economic activities in a rapidly changing world.

IB Economics Curriculum:

Microeconomics: Analyzing choices at the level of producers and consumers in individual markets.

Macroeconomics: Examining choices made by governments and their impact on the national economy.

Global economy: Exploring choices made at an international level, where countries are increasingly interconnected through trade, labor, and capital movements.

Structure of the IB Economics Syllabus:

The Economics syllabus is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

  • SL requires a minimum of 150 hours of study
  • HL requires 240 hours of study
  • The SL and HL courses cover common core content, and the HL students are required to study additional topics

IB Economics Assessments::

  • Students are assessed through both internal and external assessments.
  • The internal assessment (IA) accounts for 20% of the final grade. The internal assessment requires both SL and HL candidates to create a portfolio of three commentaries based on published extracts from the news media, using the key concepts as a lens.
  • The external assessment accounts for 80% of the final grade. The external assessment of the new 2023 IB Economics course consists of two written papers for SL students and three written papers for HL students.

More about IB Economics

At the core of economic theory lies the problem of scarcity, where unlimited needs and wants of the world’s population face limitations due to limited resources. This scarcity necessitates making choices. The DP economics course, at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL), utilizes economic theories to examine how these choices are made:

  • The choices made by economic agents (consumers, producers, and governments) generate positive and negative outcomes that influence the well-being of individuals and societies. Economics, as a social science, employs models and theories to examine these choices. The DP economics course enables students to explore and apply these models and theories by analyzing empirical data related to six real-world issues.
  • Alongside economic growth and efficiency, the course addresses two crucial global economic issues: the environmental impact of economic activities and the challenges regarding fair access to resources, goods, and services. Sustainability and equity emerge as key concepts for DP economics students to comprehend while examining these significant global issues.
  • Economic agents involved in economic activities can be categorized into the private sector (consumers and producers) and the public sector (governments). The course emphasizes the concept of government intervention, whereby the public sector monitors and regulates the behavior of the private sector to varying degrees and with different outcomes. Students are expected to critically evaluate the balance between market forces and government intervention throughout the course.
  • Given the constantly evolving nature of economic activity and its outcomes, students are encouraged to research current real-world issues. Through inquiry-based learning, students develop an appreciation for the strengths and limitations of economic models in explaining real-world economic behavior and outcomes.
  • By focusing on the six real-world issues and the nine key concepts (scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence, and intervention), students of the DP economics course acquire knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that foster responsible global citizenship.
