Physics is taught starting from the Diploma Program (DP) in the International Baccalaureate (IB). The MYP students have to take a Science course that encompasses a range of different natural sciences and prepares them for more advanced courses in the DP.
About the IB Physics
The IB DP Physics course is a part of Group 4 – sciences. The course is designed to explore the fundamental aspects of the universe, ranging from the smallest particles to the vast distances between galaxies. The course emphasizes the importance of observations in understanding and explaining physical phenomena, and it recognizes the role of models and theories in interpreting these observations.
One of the key objectives of studying physics in the DP is for students to gain an understanding of how scientists work and communicate with each other. The course adopts a practical approach, allowing students to engage in scientific inquiry, design investigations, collect and analyze data, collaborate with peers, and effectively communicate their findings. This practical aspect of the course mirrors the way scientific research is conducted in the wider scientific community.
Structure of the IB Physics Syllabus:
The Physics syllabus is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).
- SL requires a minimum of 150 hours of study
- HL requires 240 hours of study
- The SL and HL courses cover common core content, and the HL students are required to study additional topics
IB Physics Assessment:
- Students are assessed through both internal and external assessments.
- The internal assessment (IA) accounts for 20% of the final grade. The internal assessment involves an individual investigation. This investigation can be hands-on, involve the use of databases or simulations, or a combination of these approaches. The teacher assesses the student’s work, which is then externally moderated by the IB.
- The external assessment accounts for 80% of the final grade. The external assessment of the new 2023 IB Physics course consists of two written papers.
- Paper 1A includes multiple-choice questions based on the syllabus, while Paper 1B consists of data-analysis questions.
- Paper 2 includes short-answer and one extended response question for SL and two extended response questions for HL.
