IB Chemistry Tutoring

At U4Success we offer tutoring in Chemistry and Sciences for MYP and DP students

In the International Baccalaureate (IB) Chemistry is taught starting from the Diploma Program (DP). The MYP students have to take a Science course that encompasses a range of different natural sciences and prepares them for more advanced courses in the DP.

About the IB Chemistry

The IB DP Chemistry course is a part of Group 4 – sciences The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of chemistry as an experimental science and to develop their practical and investigational skills. Chemistry is considered a central science because it forms the basis for our understanding of the physical environment and biological systems. The course not only serves as a valuable subject in its own right but also acts as a prerequisite for various fields of higher education, including medicine, biological science, and environmental science.

One of the primary goals of studying chemistry is to familiarize students with the methods and communication used by scientists. While there are various approaches to scientific inquiry, the course places a strong emphasis on practical applications. The “Nature of Science” theme contextualizes students’ knowledge and skills within the contemporary scientific landscape, including ethical debates and the limitations of scientific endeavors.

The teaching of chemistry is conducted in a practical manner, allowing students to engage in designing investigations, collecting and analyzing data, developing manipulative skills, collaborating with peers, and effectively communicating their findings. These investigations can take place in laboratories or utilize simulations and databases. Students are encouraged to work independently on their own research projects, as well as collaboratively with schools in different regions, mirroring the real-world practices of scientific research communities.

Structure of the IB Chemistry Syllabus:

The Chemistry syllabus is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

  • SL requires a minimum of 150 hours of study
  • HL requires 240 hours of study
  • The SL and HL courses cover common core content, and the HL students are required to study additional topics

IB Chemistry Assessment:

  • Students are assessed through both internal and external assessments,
  • The internal assessment (IA) accounts for 20% of the final grade

The internal assessment involves an individual investigation that can incorporate hands-on experiments, data analysis, modeling, simulation, or a hybrid approach. The teacher assesses the student’s work, which is then externally moderated by the International Baccalaureate (IB).

  • The external assessment accounts for 80% of the final grade

The external assessment of the new 2023 IB Chemistry course consists of two written papers.

  • Paper 1A includes multiple-choice questions based on the syllabus, while Paper 1B consists of data-analysis questions that address all themes.
  • Paper 2 includes short-answer and extended response questions.
