About the IB Business Management

The IB DP Business Management course is a part of Group 3 – Individuals and Societies. The course is designed to equip students with the skills and mindset necessary to become effective change agents, successful business leaders, and entrepreneurs. The course aims to develop students’ confidence, creativity, and compassion, preparing them to navigate the complexities of the ever-changing global business environment.

As part of the 2023 IB Business Management Syllabus change a new conceptual framework was introduced. This framework explores four interdisciplinary concepts: creativity, change, ethics, and sustainability, allowing students to analyze these concepts from a business perspective. Each unit begins with conceptual understanding statements that summarize important ideas and core processes, enhancing students’ overall comprehension of the subject and deepening their understanding of the dynamic business world.

New 2023 IB Business Management Curriculum

The new 2023 IB Business Management SL and HL curriculum covers the following big topics:

  1. Introduction to business management
  2. Human resource management
  3. Finance and accounts
  4. Marketing
  5. Operations management

The HL students are required to study additional topics.

Structure of the 2023 IB Business Management Syllabus:

The Business Management syllabus is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

  • SL requires a minimum of 150 hours of study
  • HL requires 240 hours of study
  • The SL and HL courses cover common core content, and the HL students are required to study additional topics

IB Business Management Assessments:

  • Students are assessed through both internal and external assessments,
  • The internal assessment (IA) accounts for 20% of the final grade. It involves a business research project where students apply relevant business management tools and theories to a real organizational issue or problem. This assessment is common for both SL and HL students.
  • The external assessment accounts for 80% of the final grade. The external assessment of the new 2023 IB Physics course consists of two written papers.
    • Paper 1 involves a pre-released statement that specifies the context and theme for an unseen case study, testing students’ knowledge of contemporary business topics.
    • Paper 2 requires in-depth analysis and evaluation using business theories and tools, with a strong quantitative focus. While SL and HL students have different examinations, they share similar intent and form.
    • Paper 3 is only meant for HL students. It focuses on a social enterprise, requiring students to identify a human need, describe potential organizational challenges, and recommend a strategic plan of action for the business.
